Zainab's marriage to Abul Ash took place before the Prophet received revelation. The Prophet received a revelation about the prohibition of interfaith marriage in the 6th year after the migration to Medina.
In that year came down verse 10 of Al-Mumtahanah's letter about the prohibition of interfaith marriage.
يايها الذين امنوا اذا جاءكم المؤمنت مهجرت فامتحنوهن، الله اعلم بايمانهن فان علمتموهن مؤ منت فلا ترجعو هن الى الكفار، لا هن حل لهم ولا هم يحلون لهن، واتوهم ما انفقوا، ولا جناح عليكم ان تنكحو هن اذا اتيتمو هن اجورهن، ولا تمسكوا بعصم الكوافر وسلوا ما انفقوا، ذلكم حكم الله، يحكم بينكم، والله عليم حكيم.
"It means, "O you who believe! When a believing woman comes to you, you must test her (Faith). Allah knows better about their faith; if you have known that they (rightly) believe then do not return them to the disbelievers (their husbands) . They are not lawful to the disbelievers and the disbelievers are not lawful to them."
"And give to their (Suami) the dowry which they have given. And there is no sin for you to marry them when you pay them the dowry. And do not hold fast to the rope (Marriage) of the unbelieving woman; and ask for back the dowry which you have given; dah (If her husband remains infidel) let them ask for back the dowry they have paid (To his ex-wife who has believed) . This is the law of God which He has set among you. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
After the Prophet received the revelation, Zainab immediately converted to Islam, while Abul Ash al-Rabi' who was her husband was reluctant to follow her. But they still live together to be a couple husband and wife who are different religions.
Until Abul Ash uttered him the word of the shahada in front of the Quraysh openly. This proves that he has converted to Islam.
After that, Abul Ash hijrah facing the Prophet in Medina. Prophet Muhammad then remarried Abul Ash to Zainab after they both embraced Islam*.
