The rain fell down heavily accompanied by the roar of lightning. I do not know until when the water droplets still faithfully embrace the earth since noon. The atmosphere was completely dark due to a power outage. There may be a power line that is disrupted until there is a blackout. Lighting also with wireless lights and flashlights.
Rufi woke up from her deep sleep. He blinked his eyes and rubbed saliva on the corner of his lips. He looked up at the darkness surrounding him. His chest felt tight due to difficulty breathing because he was afraid of the dark. Want to scream calling his papa but useless because the beds of his parents are on the ground floor. He ventured to face the circumstances that seemed to strangle him. His outstretched hand opened the drawer looking for a flashlight by fingering. After the object was obtained, he intended to get out of the room to find out the sound of crying that had disturbed him dreaming. Although the roar of lightning sounded quite loud deafening, yet he could still hear the sound of that cry. He was curious because he did not have another brother or sister, because it was the only child of the Edwin Sastra family. Where his parents loved and devoted everything to him. It was truly inconceivable if he really had a brother? their love will be divided. That can't happen. Rufi was used to being alone and she was happy as well.
Slowly Rufi went down the stairs with a flashlight lighting from her right hand. His left hand held the wall beside him. He walked through space by space until his steps stopped in the dividing glass between the reading room and the swimming pool next to his house. The sound of crying was very clear. And sure enough, the next second his eyes were rounded to see a daughter sitting covered face with both palms. She's still crying. Instantly Rufi gave a goosebumps and fear began to ambush her. The clock on the wall shows at half-time. The girl is still crying. Out of pity and curiosity for his figure, Rufi ventured to approach him. Slowly he opened the door and approached her. He no longer cared even if the figure of the girl he met was an invisible creature. Isn't being friends with him a loss, too?
When their distance was only a fraction of an inch, Rufi came to a halt. He set his heart rate to a speedy one ahead of the second of the hour. He took a breath and exhaled it slowly over and over again. Hearing someone approaching her, the girl stopped her crying and turned her head. He was surprised to see Rufi standing not far from him, the boy who was several years old on top of him.
" Who are you? why are you crying in the middle tonight? " ask Rufi. He asked despite being scared. Even his heart was still beating violently despite trying to calm down. Looking at the girl carefully, her face was not pale at all, meaning it was not mediating as in her mind. She is human, also beautiful despite her messy appearance.
The girl in white with short unraveled hair, she rubbed her eyes. His nose also let out a little snot which made him somewhat disgusted. Probably because of his crying. Rufi's fear began to disappear and changed with a faint smile.
" My name is Kanaya, I'm looking for my mother, "he said with a whim.
Mammy? Who did he mean? There are three women in this house. One of my mothers and the other two were housekeepers. Could she have something to do with one of my maids? thought Rufi.
" What's your mother's name? " ask Rufi. The girl started to smile, she also looked calm. The moonlight of the silent witnesses illuminated their conversation as the rain began to subside even though lightning was still heard.
But the girl did not have time to answer, bik Sumi half ran with a flashlight in her right hand to illuminate them. Rufi and the girl closed her glare-eyed with an arm. The woman who has limitations with hearing and speech was directly hugging the girl who was still sitting facing the pool. He also rubbed the boy's face and kissed him repeatedly. The woman was a long-serving maid to her family. Even when Rufi was a baby, she also took care of her when Rianti was busy working.
- Thank you, he said using a hand gesture and a nod of his head to Rufi. Rufi nodded.
- Who is he? ask Rufi. Because the existence of the girl who surprised him had disturbed his curiosity.
- My son, he answered. With a signal the woman explained the girl's matter. And once again Rufi nodded in understanding. She was already familiar with the language of the maid whom she had already considered her second mother.
I left it in the bathroom. When I went back to the room, she was gone. I tried to find him in all corners of the house. Thank goodness he is here with you, Rufi.
Finished answering Rufi's question, the woman quickly brought the girl into her room at the corner. Rufi followed him until it separated between the maid room with the family room, she also headed to her room back on the second floor. He was relieved and was about to pick up his dream again until morning.
In the morning, Rufi wakes up and immediately takes a shower welcoming her routine again as a fifth grader at a state elementary school. He was already prepared with the bag on his back. With light steps she headed to the dining room to have breakfast with her parents. The bag is placed on the chair. While sitting down, he was shocked when his two beads clashed with a girl who was already wearing a uniform like him. The child was busy chewing food greedily until his cheeks seemed round. His hair was two-painted and smiled at him. Rufi returned that smile faintly. He stared at Kanaya strangely as the boy's head continued to sway to the left right. The boy really enjoyed the breakfast with untold happiness. Besides the plate containing breakfast there is also a glass of milk like his. His face seemed to be stroking the top of the boy's head. And that made Rufi wonder.
Wasn't she the one who cried last night? thought Rufi.
" Fi, meet Kanaya the youngest son of Sumi's monk. He'll be enrolled in your school. Let it go together later, " said Mr. Edwin explained.
" School with me, pa? " ask Rufi doubtfully. His presence began to steal the attention of his parents. Even though the girl did not understand.
" Yes, papa has promised that his late father will take care of him and take care of him" he explained. Then papa told me about the origin of why the child was at home and also concerned about his condition that had become an orphan.
While Bik Sum just nodded and said Thank you to the master who kindly helped him. A few days ago, her beloved husband came home. She is sad and confused about living without her husband. His eldest son has been married and living out of town with his new family, someone who is expected to help his sister resist. Luckily the master was willing to help send Kanaya to school.
They continued to eat breakfast again. Rianti, mama Rufi smiled. The woman was happy to even raise Kanaya as her son. And the decision of his two parents without going through even the consent of him made him frown, lift the child?? is that true? thought Rufi.
After breakfast, Rufi, Kanaya and Edwin get into the car escorted by the Didin mang. Rufi was busy staring at her gadget playing games while spending time, while Kanaya was engrossed in staring out of the car window.
" Rufi don't play a lot of gadgets, "reproved Edwin. The man did not like to see the child who was addicted to playing games. Rufi looked up at the papa and immediately put the flat object into her bag. He forgot that he was still in the car with the man who rarely smiled. Rufi stared from the rearview mirror. While Edwin shook his head to see the child was not also deterred from playing gadgets despite being punished repeatedly. Being bored, Rufi also followed along doing the same thing with Kanaya. Trying to enjoy the busyness of the city even though he does not like.
After the car is perfectly parked, they get off to school. Rufi had already run over to her friends. Edwin clasped Kanaya's hand tightly to the teacher's room to register his adopted son.
" Who's with your dad? " ask Gilang.
" Oh that, he's Kanaya, " explains Rufi. Really that kid stole the attention of the people closest to me, he murmured.
" Will he list a school here? beautiful too, " Bhaskara said.
" He still wants first class. You like that snot kid? " ask Rufi.
" We are all also snot, ha. ha. ha. ha.. , "laughter Gilang. They also broke down.
Rufi immediately punched Gilang in the cheek to stop talking about Kanaya and rushed to take him up to the second floor where the fifth grade was.
Edwin's room was warmly welcomed by several teachers who had attended. A teacher approached and asked the purpose of the man in the gray suit coming to the school. Edwin explained in detail as his two beads looked towards Kanaya who was sitting next to him. The teacher understood and began to explain the procedure of registration for Kanaya. The boy was just about to get his first grade of primary school education.
..............
Rufi was playing a gadget when her leg was suddenly kicked by someone. He grimaced and stared intently at who had kicked his leg. Kanaya runs around holding her white rabbit doll. He did not realize that he had kicked Rufi.
" Kanaya, why are you kicking my leg? " ask Rufi annoyed. Kanaya is shocked and stops her escape. He approached Rufi. From a distance the boy looked apprehensive with a pale white skinny body but when near the child was indeed beautiful as said by Bhaskara. Rufi was amazed to forget her sore leg but it did not last long.
" I was unintentional. Why are his feet in the middle of the road? " he asked plainly, his sister's name was used to call Rufi. Rufi became annoyed. He stood around with his waist.
" Aren't you sorry but you blame me? " spoken Rufi while glaring. Kanaya was scared, she fell silent. The girl hugged her doll tightly. However, feeling intimidated by Rufi's angry gaze, she slowly felt the heat in both of her eyes. Without waiting a minute later, he shed tears at the scuffles from Rufi. How much he did not like to be treated like that which his parents never did to him. His father and mother treated him gently.
" I'm sorry for crying?? " ask Rufi. Really, Kanaya's behavior makes him not out of thought, just a little snapped has melow dramatically. What if he retaliates by kicking his little leg?
Kanaya cried, the longer the harder it was to make the bik Sumi and Rianti who were in the kitchen half ran up to them. Even Rianti accidentally brought a knife and an apple he was about to peel out of surprise.
" What's up? what the hell's going on? " ask Rianti. Then the woman placed the two carried objects on the table. Without needing to ask, the woman directly stared at Rufi.
" He kicked my leg, ma. He did not want to apologize but instead cried, " Rufi explained. Bik Sumi approached Kanaya and calmed her down by rubbing her back. Bik Sumi clenched her fingers together by apologizing to the flat-faced Rufi. Rianti asked Kanaya and the girl replied with a whim if Rufi had snapped at her.
" Rufy, don't be rude to Kanaya. He was a child, you should be able to say it slowly, "reproved Rianti. The young woman who always seemed gentle to Rufi now looked different. Rufi gasped with the reprimand and the ever-shaded face painted an irritated hue like Rufi had made a fatal mistake. Rufi was a little careless.
How complicated would it be if she were my real sister? rufi murmured and left the three women. His peace as an only child and the center of attention began to be displaced by the existence of the child. He breathed a rough breath.
Oh God, things have changed, Rufi thought.
Rufi stepped towards her room. She was disappointed that her mother did not rebuke Kanaya. Because he felt that the girl deserved it more, not him. He played his gadget again until he fell asleep.
Since Kanaya came and lived in that house, she brought many changes to Rufi. Starting from the lack of attention from both parents to other things must be the same as him. Edwin and Rianti really treat Kanaya like her own child even though Kanaya is reluctant to call them mama papa. The boy was ashamed to do so because for him they were both masters of his mother which meant he had to be respectful and obedient.
Although disappointed and angry slowly Rufi tried to accept the girl to be his adopted sister. He seemed to care less from the outside with a cold flat face but actually he cared a lot. Rufi showed it with her non-verbal behavior. Kanaya realizes that and also begins to manage her recklessness which accidentally makes Rufi offended and angry. He had to be sweet for Rufi to like him. Because of so many people only he is not too fond of its existence.
