"Mommy is what Papi wants to talk to Alex about? Why do they have to talk in Papi's office? Why not just stay here?" Desi whine with various questions. She is currently sleeping on the lap of her mother, who has been pregnant with her for nine months. After dinner, Darmawan's father wanted to discuss something with Alex in secret. But they had to speak in the study rather than in front of Desi.
"Mami doesn't know either" Siska replied, shaking her shoulders and not understanding what made her husband invite his son-in-law to enter the study at his home. From earlier his hand did not stop rubbing his daughter's head full of love. "But didn't even say anything about talking to Alex to Mami" explained Siska who did not know the meaning of the husband. Just after dinner, the man who had been married to her for about twenty-eight years spoke to his daughter-in-law to follow his steps towards his study.
A moment Desi sat down and looked at her mother with a panicked look. "Will Papi scold Alex?" I asked with a huge panic.
"Sat..." Trying to calm his daughter by rubbing her back.
"Mommy remembers the time Alex proposed to me. Papi was against our marriage. And now..."
"Desi... Relax for a moment..."
"I can't calm down, Mom..." Desi is standing. "I'm going to Papi's office..." He said again as he walked away from the face of his mother.
"Desi... Listen to Mama first..." Siska had taken hold of Desi's right hand to stop her steps. Again trying to calm the growing Desi panic. "Bapi sure..."
"The fire will surely be angry with Alex Mam..." Desi said that cut off his mother's words. "It looks like Papi hasn't yet settled on me and Alex. Papi's..."
"Darling..." Siska calmed her daughter's heart. He just didn't want Desi to interrupt the conversation between her husband and daughter-in-law. "Listen to Mami first," said Siska as she sat Desi on the sofa they were sitting on together. "But must be talking seriously with Alex but Mami believes Papi won't hurt Alex. Papi loves you very much. And we know you love Alex very much. Papi wants you to be happy. So it's certain that Papi won't hurt Alex" said Siska, who stroked her only daughter's cheek. Trying to slowly explain to Desi that her husband does not intend to be evil to Alex.
A moment Desi can calm down but somehow his negative thoughts on the father can not he tepis. He still thinks in there, Alex is being scolded by the husband of his mother. "I can't stay here" said Desi who had stood back up. "I have to catch up with Alex inside" said another who had walked into his father's study. Alex's worry deepened in his heart when Alex was still not seen coming out of his father's office, but it was almost an hour.
Desi and Siska clashed at the door of Darmawan's study. Desi desperately tries to enter but Siska also tries desperately to prevent her from entering her father's study. And when the feud between mother and child was never finished, the door of Darmawan's work room opened from the inside.
Darmawan saw his wife and son standing in front of the door of his study did not make a sound. It was different when he was still inside. His ears heard such a tremendous noise that he and his daughter-in-law would not want to come out. For a few seconds he looked at his only daughter, but for a moment he stepped away and took his wife's hand. Only five steps Darmawan walked and suddenly he stopped his steps. He turned to face his daughter who was still standing at the door of his study. "You two stay here. Immediately go to sleep because it's night," said Darmawan who then stepped back to go to his room.
Desi who saw the departure of her parents immediately pulled Alex's hand to follow her steps. He climbed the stairs and went to his room. There are a lot of questions I would ask Alex. After entering his room, Desi hurriedly closed the door. "What did Papi tell you? Why was it in there so long? You're not angry with him, are you? Or were you hit by Papi?" Desi's questions were launched on Alex. I can't wait to hear Alex's answer. He even scrutinized all of Alex's limbs, fearing that his father would wrath at the man standing in front of him.
"Stop..." Alex said while holding both arms Desi so that women who had seen worried about him immediately stop the action that examines all parts of his body. "I'm fine..." Alex said again as he walked towards the sofa that was sitting there.
"You lied!" Said Desi trailing behind Alex. He also sits on the same couch as Alex. "But calling you must be something he wants to say, right? Tell me, don't lie to me again."
"alright... Alright... I'll say it" Alex said. He then took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. Glanced at the short-haired woman next to him. "I... Me and Papi..." Alex hangs up his sentence.
"Quick say!" Desi orders while hitting Alex's arm a little hard. I can't wait to hear Alex's story. He was very curious about what his father had done to Alex.
"In the study, me and Papi were playing chess."
"If you don't believe me, just ask Papi" Alex said. "I'm going to go to the bathroom" he said, walking toward the bathroom.
"Well..." Desi breathed a rough breath into the air. He still couldn't believe what Alex had told him. There was no way his father would call Alex into his study if he was just going to play chess.
While in the bathroom, Alex was standing in front of the sink. Looking at himself in front of the mirror. He recalled the words his father-in-law had told him.
The flashback
Darmawan and Alex were already sitting opposite each other in their seats. There was only one table that separated the two of them. Almost five minutes Darmawan was still staring at Alex with a sharp gaze. And Alex could only remain silent when her father-in-law wanted to talk to her by taking her to work.
"Is there anything you want Papi to say?" Ask Alex who can't wait to hear what made his father-in-law pull him here.
"I just want to play chess with you" replied Darmawan who opened the chessboard and began arranging chess pieces on chess pieces.
Alex knew this wasn't an important point when her in-laws called her here. But as a good daughter-in-law, she had to live what her in-laws had to say. He served a game of chess from his in-laws. For almost half an hour, no words came out of them.
"Thank you..."
Alex was shocked by the one word that came out from the mouth of his male in-laws. His hand that was already holding the king's pawn was now hanging in the air. He looked at the face of his father-in-law, who was now about fifty-five years old.
"Thank you for loving Desi with all your heart" said Darmawan who now also looks at his only son-in-law.
Alex who still holds the chess pawn can only hold the important pawn in the chess game. The words of the in-laws were truly not worth it. He married Desi only because he wanted to stop his mother from matching him with many women. When the father-in-law thanked him, he felt very guilty.
"The fire just wants you to keep Desi for the rest of your life. Desi is an independent woman. But Papi wants you to keep guarding and protecting Desi forever."
Alex was silent to the words of his father-in-law. For some reason when Desi's father said that, now it was like there was a very heavy burden on his shoulders. At once his lips were twisted, unable to answer the words of Darmawan. Because according to his agreement with Desi, he will only be the husband of Desi for one year.
Flashback off
Alex was still staring at himself in the mirror. There was a sense of tightness in his heart as he recalled the words from his father-in-law. He did not want to disappoint Desi's parents but he also would not violate the contents of his agreement with Desi.
