Nika's attitude is what makes Kayla not want to hurt the girl. Nika has suffered from illness at a young age, nor does she want to add to that pain by being frank about her relationship with Dev.

"Ah that's not so, we just eat and watch."

"I know" said Kayla again.

"Sorry" said Dev.
