"There, but the chicken satay and the goat satay are gone. Only the rabbit satay and hedgehog satay, do you want a message?" ask the waiter who is standing next to Bima.

"How's Sri?" bima asked who was looking towards Sri, and Sri nodded her head.

" Well, what do you drink, sir?" ask the waiter.

"Sweet tea hot alone two!" sahut Sri while reviewing his smile.

Bima turned towards Sri and then looked towards the waiter and agreed to what was in Sri's message.

"Well that's it, hot sweet tea!" bima said, who then sat down to his chair.

"Well ladies and gentlemen, please be patient waiting for ya" said the waiter who then left Bima and Sri

"Sri, I guess porcupine meat is illegal what is halal?" ask Bima who wants to know.

"Some say haram, and some say halal. Try Sri find out for more details on the phone" said Sri while opening the phone screen and so with Bima.

The Law of Eating Hedgehog Meat in Islam

According to Shafiiyah scholars, hedgehogs are among the animals that are halal to eat. This is because hedgehogs include animals that are thoyyibat or good for consumption. The delinquency of eating this hedgehog is affirmed by Imam Al-Shafi’i and his followers, such as Imam Laits bin Sa’ad, and Imam Abu Tsaur and other Syafiiyah scholars. Similarly, according to some Hanabilah scholars such as Imam Al-Shaukani, and Imam Al-Shan’ani.

However, some types of hedgehogs include protected animals, such as Javanese hedgehogs, as reported by Kompas. Therefore, we should not carelessly hunt animals that are protected by the state.

In Darul Ifta’ Al-Mishriyah is also emphasized about the ability and halalness of eating hedgehogs. This is as stated as follows;

السؤال: ما الحكم الشرعي في أكل لحم كلٍّ من: القنفذ والثعلب والضبع؟‎

الجواب:لا حرج في مذهبنا في أكل كلٍّ من: القنفذ، والثعلب، والضبع؛ لأنها من الطيبات التي تستطيبها العرب، وقد قال الله تعالى: يَسْأَلُونَكَ مَاذَا أُحِلَّ لَهُمْ قُلْ أُحِلَّ لَكُمُ الطَّيِّبَاتُ. فما استطابته العرب في عادتها كان حلالاً، وما عدوه خبيثاً فهو محرم؛ لأن القرآن نزل بلغتهم، فكان عرفهم في تفسير قوله تعالى: (الطيبات) هو الحكم‎

Answer: It does not matter in the madzhab we eat porcupine meat, ferret and hyena. This is because the animals include animals thoyyibat or good to eat, and have also been considered good by the Arabs. Allah has said: They ask you (Muhammad): What is wrong for them?.

Say: What is wrong for you is good food. What is considered good by the Arabs in their custom is lawful, and what is considered disgusting is haram. This is because the Quran comes down with their language, and therefore their understanding in interpreting the word of Allah ‘al-thoyyibat’ is the law.
