Chapter 24: Corpse Deviation (Part 1)

Saturday, 1 January 2005. Just a week after the tsunami hit Aceh and destroyed the entire city.

Today, Vishnu and his mother are preparing to return home, after days of living in overcrowded shelters.

There is a good reason why my mother decided so. He wanted to see the condition of his home. Perhaps there was a precious item he could save from the ruins of the house. Or maybe, maybe he could meet with relatives who survived there. He just wanted to make sure with his own eyes.

And just now, Vishnu and his mother came out of the refugee tent, then started walking straight ahead. The mother continued to lead her son to a black pickup at the end.

"Can I ride sir? I want to go to Lamteungoh. I want to see the condition of my house." Vishnu's mother said to the driver of the black pickup car.

With humility, the driver gave him permission. Both are welcome to board. About 30 minutes later, the car began to drive, starting to drive carrying Vishnu and his mother, as well as several other refugees to their respective destinations.

During the journey, they saw a lot of destruction. Wherever they looked, all they encountered was destruction. Trees fell, houses collapsed and bodies. Under the clear morning sky, only that ill-fated sight could they encounter. Along with the sea water at that time, happiness was also carried away by him as well. Leaving only the debris of the nestapa who knows when it will recover.

Vishnu was an only child, whose own father had died from childhood. Now only with the mother, Vishnu must pass through the trials of life that are really heavy.

Then, 30 minutes later, they reach their destination. The speed of the car stopped, with careful steps, Vishnu got out of the car with his mother. After thanking the driver, the two began to walk straight, down the ground strewn with debris from yesterday's disaster.

Vishnu and his mother still had to walk about another one and a half kilometers to get to their house. On the way, the two can only look at the vast expanse of land that is beautiful, all the houses are destroyed meaningless. Piles of wood and rocky walls, filling the entire road with pills.

From the extent of the ravaged area, Vishnu noticed a female corpse, wearing a red negligee dress on the right there. His face was torn and filled with dried blood. Vishnu, who was only 9 years old, could only look at the corpse without emotion. His mother told the child to stop looking at him.

Although it has been 1 week since the tsunami hit, although there have been many SAR teams and volunteers who went back and forth to look for bodies, until now, there are still so many bodies scattered in various corners. It's buried in ruins, nameless and decaying. The land that was once peaceful, has now turned into hell. And Vishnu, at a young age, had to witness all these dark sights innocently.

When Vishnu and his mother arrived there, they both saw that their house had collapsed. His condition was no longer in shape. The anxiety of the mother who was convinced that her house must be destroyed, has now become a reality.

There's no hope. With a sad face, the mother fell to her knees to the ground. He took a stone from his ruined house, and grimaced with his tears that were about to fall. While Vishnu the child, can only look at his mother who is sad.

'Then, now what?' maybe that's what Vishnu's mother thinks today. After knowing his house was destroyed, he grabbed his son's hand tightly while thinking what he should do now. There was no one there but themselves. Relatives who before the disaster lived beside the house, now go somewhere. With the fading despair, the mother began to lead her son along. Who goes, maybe there's something good ahead.

Then after walking 1 kilometer to the east, the two saw a volunteer digging the ruins. To the volunteer, the mother said, "Sir, is there a post nearby?"

With a smile, the volunteer told them to walk straight. About half a kilometer away, they will find a makeshift post built by volunteers there. And then the conversation ended.

And true, when Vishnu and his mother arrived there, both of them saw a team of volunteers who were gathered in an open field. The surrounding area seems to have been sterilized to build a post. Without lingering, the mother took Vishnu there immediately.

"Sir, am I the same my son can stay here?" Vishnu's mother said to a team of volunteers who were setting up a new tent.

Volunteers are happy to receive their arrival. With open arms, the volunteers allowed Vishnu and his mother to stay. But, because all the tents were filled with refugees, Vishnu and his mother were told to be patient first, at least until the new tent they made now so. And glad, both will be patiently waiting.

It may not be certain, but more or less, this time has shown at 11 p.m. Vishnu and his mother are safe by living in a tent that is not too big, maybe only fit about 5 to 7 people. But at least, both have a place now.

His mother was asleep, maybe. But Vishnu himself, he can't sleep now. Then without telling his mother, Vishnu woke himself up, stepped over the feet of the people sleeping in the tent, then walked out. He was about to pee.

Arriving outside, Vishnu immediately rushed to the emergency toilet in the back corner. Its own tolerance such as******, where the disposal of dirt, will immediately boil in a trench that flows water. So that it does not accumulate and cause odor.

Until then, when the road slightly turned, Vishnu saw a woman at the end there, he stood looking exactly back at Vishnu who was about to go to the toilet. With a dim light, Vishnu only knew that the woman was wearing a shabby red negligee and had rather long hair. Vishnu did not think strangely, he thought the woman was a refugee as well as he seemed. Then the child continued the road to the toilet regardless of the figure of the woman.

Until then, when Vishnu and the woman stood in the same line, the cold weather just pierced the skin of Vishnu, he became creepy because of it. Then accidentally, Vishnu turned to look at the woman who was now standing next to him. In an instant, Vishnu was surprised not to play, when he saw the face of the woman was torn everywhere. Even fresh blood poured down her pale skin. His spooky stature, of course immediately makes Vishnu run away in a storm towards the tent again.

To his mother, Vishnu said, "Mom, mother. I just saw a demon decoction toilet. Anterin I yuk Bu to the toilet. I'm scared, but I'm gonna take a piss." Vishnu said while patting his mother's cheek slowly over and over again. Inevitably, his mother woke up. After understanding the grievance of his baby, the two of them then stood up, and walked along to the toilet together.

Arriving there, the sinister red women berdaster was no longer there. What Vishnu and his mother saw at this time was just empty grounds, there was no one there but themselves. After a moment of silence, the mother said, "Judah is okay. Don't think about it. You pee there, I wait here." Speak to him politely. He himself realized, maybe his son had just experienced a mystical thing. But he didn't want to scare her with a no-no. Therefore, he chose not to comment further.

And as he walked into the toilet, Vishnu just realized, that the woman he saw earlier, exactly the same as the corpse he saw this morning. Using a red negligee, a face full of torn wounds, as well as blood covering the face.

Next day. Vishnu just finished his bath. Her still wet hair began to be dried with a small towel by her mother. Along with that, the two of them began to jest together in the midst of the disastrous conditions that actually sliced hearts. But the situation did not last long, because the mother was called by one of the volunteers to help cook. Appreciating his request, he came out of the tent to help, leaving his son Vishnu there alone.

Sometime after his mother went out, Vishnu who was now in the tent, like hearing someone call his name. "Vishnu, Vishnu. Play yuk." More or less that is the whisper that Vishnu heard at this time.

With his innocence, the boy could only look to and fro looking for the source of the sound. Until finally, he began to get up and look for the sound out of the tent.

Outside the tent, Vishnu saw a boy wearing a blue shirt that was the same age as him standing sculpting. Yes, the boy is a friend of Vishnu, his name is Akhyar. That voice, too, came from him. "Vishnu, play yuk." Akhyar once again invited Vishnu.

Vishnu nodded with a smile, which meant he accepted Akhyar's invitation just now. With a happy face, the two started running small towards a place together.

Now Vishnu and Akhyar around the beach area. Before the disaster, they often played there with other friends to have fun, play ball on the beach or just a race to make a sand castle. It may sound cheap, but there is nothing more fun than that for both. But baby, it's just a story of the past. Unlike the past, now the atmosphere of the beach has changed. His condition was chaotic, as well as many adults there. Vishnu was also forbidden to enter the coastal area closer.

"Why did you come here alone? Here the danger. Your parents survived?" Ask a man to Vishnu kindly. The boy replied, nodding his head slowly. Knowing the meaning of Vishnu's gesture, the man again said, "Jaudah come home yes. Don't play here, danger." Vishnu certainly understood the prohibition that the man had just uttered, therefore, he also complied. Then he started to turn around and walk home.

But, there is one question that now arises in the mind of Vishnu. It's not why he can't play on the beach. What now bothered him was, why did the man say that he had come there alone? Does that person not see that Akhyar is with him now?
