One afternoon, a car stopped in front of an orphanage. Plaque inscribed with the Pearl of Love hung above the sky-blue painted wooden entrance.
The steering door was opened, a man wearing a dark blue cotton uniform circled the car to reach the passenger door at the front. The man opened the door while bowing. “Please, Mistress,”tell the man.
There came out a middle-aged woman wearing golden-framed glasses. Her slippery white dress fell to her knees as she stood upright on top of her five centimeter heels. “Thank you," the middle-aged woman replied as she nodded.
The boy returned to the car after his mistress entered the orphanage. He parked the car on the land provided by the orphanage, in the form of a paving field that can be loaded three trucks at once.
The middle-aged woman who had entered the orphanage was named Ratih Suyatmi or commonly called Madam Suyatmi. His desire to adopt a child was steady so his firm steps immediately led him to meet the in charge of the orphanage.
In the room, Mrs Suyatmi was greeted by a man named Yanto, the in charge of the orphanage and the owner of Yayasan Mutiara Kasih. After being invited to sit down, Suyatmi said her goal was to come to the orphanage. Yanto nodded then asked, “So Madam wants to adopt a child from this home?”
"Yes, right," replied Lady Suyatmi. “Then let me transfer to meet the children,” said Mr. Yanto while showing the way to where the children gathered.
Mr. Yanto invited Mrs Suyatmi to visit all the children who were waiting so that Suyatmi could choose one of them. “Hey, kids, come here! Anyone would like to meet you all!” exclaim Mr. Yanto. They immediately approached Mr. Yanto except for one child who was sitting alone near a tree while drawing. Bagasses.
“Let's all salim at Mrs Suyatmi,” orders Mr. Yanto. They all immediately kissed the back of Lady Suyatmi's hand in turn. It was clearly a happy and hopeful look on the faces of those poor children. A reasonable expression is shown by the orphanage child when visited by the adoptive parents.
When one by one the children kissed Madam Suyatmi's hand, her eyes were fixed on a boy sitting alone. “Who is that kid over there?” ask Madam Suyatmi.
"Oh .. he Bagas. He often spends his time drawing there" replied Mr. Yanto.
“Is she part of the parlour like these kids?” ask Madam Suyatmi again.
“Yes, but he never wants to come when there are prospective parents who want to adopt," explained Mr. Yanto.
Suyatmi was silent for a moment. He felt that there was something interesting about the boy. "May I approach him?” pinta Madam Suyatmi.
"Please,” reply Mr. Yanto.
“Thank you." Madam Suyatmi walked over to Bagas.
“Why did he even approach the handicapped and strange child?" one of the children said cynically when Suyanti approached Bagas. Not without reason he said that. Bagas's physique was indeed abnormal. His right shoulder was higher than his left shoulder so Bagas had to use a cane while walking. So she felt that Madame Suyatmi should have preferred her over the handicapped Bagas.
“Assalamaicum. Good afternoon,” rebukes Mrs Suyatmi, but Bagas just keep quiet and keep drawing. Feeling neglected, Suyatmi again asked, “What are you drawing, son?” tanyakanya.
“Can I see it?" pinta Madam Suyatmi. Without saying anything, Bagas showed the picture to Madam Suyatmi.
Suyatmi's eyes widened and then glazed over after seeing the picture of Bagas. It was seen a boy sitting alone in the middle of horizontal arrays, hordes of clouds, and soft red abstract scribbles. Both of the boys eyebrows were drawn in black pencil, curving down as the shape of his lips.
The combination of black and red color dominated Suyatmi's heart with loneliness and anger. Two emotions convoluted and twisted his heart.
He stroked Bagas' head and said softly. “I've also felt the same way with you.”
After that Mrs Suyatmi directly spoke to Mr. Yanto in his room. “So Madam wants to adopt Bagas?” ask Mr. Yanto to make sure.
“Iya, I want to adopt it,” replied Suyatmi firmly while nodding.
Mr. Yanto tapped his three fingers alternately at the table. “I'm not sure if he wants to be adopted,” explained Mr. Yanto.
Madam Suyatmi furrowed her brows. “Why do you talk like that?” ask Madam Suyatmi.
“Actually Bagas still has family and he came here for his will,” explained Mr. Yanto after sighing heavily.
Suyatmi's eyebrows are getting wrinkled. He opened his mouth and stuttered for a moment, then asked, “Why can it be like that?”
"Because Bagas does not want to be a burden on his parents. He realized his poor parents would not be able to take care of him. Bagas insisted that his parents leave him at the home.
After a long discussion, finally they were forced to agree to Bagas' wishes," said Mr. Yanto with his lips bent down and eyebrows drooped.
Madam Suyatmi was getting curious. Frowning his brows, he asked, "Then?"
"After he lived here, he was always aloof and refused to be adopted by anyone. Since he does not want to be a burden on the person who adopted him,” replied Mr. Yanto.
Madam Suyatmi nodded in understanding. Bagas a unique and sad child. But there is something that Suyatmi does not understand from the story of Yanto. “If you can know, what caused her disability? What since birth?” ask Suyatmi again.
Yanto quickly shook his head. "No. He was disabled because of his old wounds. We went to the hospital to treat it. But it turns out it takes a big cost to cure Bagas. And we don't have that much money" Yanto said, then paused. His chest seemed to deflate as he took a deep breath.
