The first snow falls in mid-October. The forest looks amazing, the leaves change color. Sally and Simon spent most of the day with their fingernails filled with oil, with excitement about the ones they faced as they painted.
They often forget about normal things, such as parent-teacher consultations. Maybe I'm a bit lonely - at least now I have a piano at home to accompany my daily life. But in Richmond, their studio was in the attic; here, they were a mile away in the center.
Zed has an agenda like protecting Sky or his soul mate, but I refuse to discuss both with Zed. But with a boy like Zed, what do you expect? Relationships with him will never go well.
Tina dropped me off at the corner. She made me sad about Zed, not trusting me when I told her that she was always nice to me ever since she decided to open a new page and tried to convince me that dating was a good idea.
"He kissed you in the doorway?" His word.
"Well, he did." I'm getting a little upset with him now. "He's much better than he looks." At least that's what I think of him.
"Yes, because he wants you."
I clenched my hand. As an alternative to shouting. All the students to the teachers predicted some disaster would come from my relationship with Zed.
They were all determined to make Zed a villain and I a girl who knew nothing that would get her in trouble.
Nelson was constantly worried, warning me about what he would do to Zed if anything went wrong.
I've gotten coded advice from various female staff members about not letting myself be pushed any further than I wanted.
"Alone again, Sky?" call Mrs Hoffman when I get home from school.
"I hope so."
"Wanna come in for a second? I've made brownies."
"Thank you, but I .. uh .. have homework to do."
"Then I'll bring you some."
"Thank you"
I'm used to dodging Mrs Hoffman now. You never leave his house unless you have free time because it's impossible to get out of a conversation with him, no matter how evasive you are. Me alone, it was a little easier and he always respected schoolchildren.
'Sky, are you okay?'
After weeks of disbelief, I finally had to admit that I could hear her voice in my head. The zed? I looked out the window, half expecting the car to be in front of the house.
'Where are you?' ask me.
'At home. Do you want to come here?'
'How are you ...? No wait, how do we talk so far?'
'We can. You want to come?'
The choice between sitting at home or supporting the Zed family?
'Mom went to Denver. Yves attended the school convention . It's just me, Dad, and Xav at home'
'Okay, I'll come. I can take the cable car, right?' I started coming down, pulling my jacket off the pole.
'No! I don't want you out alone - the days are getting dark. I'll come pick you up'
'I'm not afraid of the dark.'
'But I'm the one who's scared'
He closed the conversation. I sat on the bottom of the stairs and massaged my temple. It seems more difficult to talk like this over longer distances, somehow but more exhausting. I think I should ask him.
I heard jeep ten minutes later. I rushed in my jacket and locked the house and ran out of the house.
"You must have broken every traffic rule to get here quickly!"
He gave me a gentle smile. " I was already on my way when I called you"
"You think it's an incoming call?" I got into the passenger seat next to him and the car was running. "You can use a cell phone like anyone else."
"Signal here is bad-too many mountains."
"That's one reason?"
Again he smiled.
"No. It makes us closer to each other."
I thought of one thing. "Do you also talk to others in this way?"
"Only my family. We have the lowest phone bill in the valley."
I laugh. "Can you talk to your brothers in Denver?"
He placed his right arm behind my chair, rubbing my nape gently. "Why did you ask so many questions?" He said with a smile.
"I'm sorry I asked so much, Zed, I just haven't gotten used to my current situation"
" It's okay" We turned to the trail along the side of the ski lodges that led to his home. "I'll pull over."
"Why? Is there a problem?"
"Nothing's wrong. I was just wondering if we'd have a chance to be alone when we got home, so I just wanted to kiss you"
I backed off a little. "Zed, is this real? You want to be with me?"
He opened my seat belt. "That's sure. You are everything I want. Everything I need."
"I still don't understand."
"And kissed her?"
She laughs. "I'll do it later, if it's here, I seem selfish"
Zed's father caught us from outside the house, he was wearing a work shirt and carrying a toolbox.
The Benedict House is a board-walled house painted in vanilla ice cream, curled up next to the end of a cable car above the city.
"That's it, Zed." Mr. Benedict wiped his greasy hands with a rag. "I saw you coming."
For some reason, Zed seemed annoyed. "Dad"
"You know we can't control it unless we concentrate. You forgot to put up a shield. Sky, it's good to see you again. We've never met properly, I'm Saul Benedict."
Xavier came from jogging around the house. "Hi!'
"You did it too?, '' erang Zed.
" Why?"
"Dad saw Sky and me."
Xavier raised both of his hands innocently "I'm nowhere near your mind, although I can guess what's going to happen"
"Get out of my mind" Zed warned.
"What does that mean, 'near your mind'?" manya suspect.
The three men looked awkward. I could have sworn Saul's neck was flushed.
"Are you talking to your dad while you're driving?"
"No"
"He knew about that?" Saul said in a low voice and Zed nodded. "How can you?"
Zed shrugged. "just happened. Dad heard what Mom said about him - he was a bridge. It's hard to explain"
A bridge? What was that?
Saul waved at me to get Zed into the house. "My son spoke to you in your mind, Sky?"
"Pulse... Maybe"
"You haven't told anyone?"
"no. It sounds a little messy if I tell anyone else"
He looks relieved. "We'd prefer it if you didn't tell him, so I'd really appreciate it if you kept it to yourself."
"Good"
"Yes, you don't have a problem with that?"
"Yes, but I was more worried when Zed seemed to know what I was thinking before I did." Not to mention the soulmate thing.
The small lines deepened around Saul-laugh's eyes without a sound. "Yes, we all feel that way about Zed. He never believed Santa's story of going in from the chimney when he was a kid. But I'm glad you learned to deal with it."
The house is a very warm, eclectic mix of objects from all over the world spread throughout the living room, strong in Latin America.
I feel a family that is well connected. I peeked in a room and saw a large amount of ski equipment strewn across the utility room.
"Wow"
"Yes, we're serious about skiing, even though Zed here prefers surfing" Saul said with a sweet smile.
"Public enemy number one," Xavier comments pretending to shoot his brother.
"Surfers and skiers don't ride?" Ask me.
"Not every moment" said Saul. "You skiing?"
Zed must have read the answer in my mind. "He's not playing"
"England is not known for its snow." Answer me.
"Dad, we have an emergency. Lessons will start from the first fall" Xavier said.
"really." Said Saul
" I don't think it'll be very good at that." Answer Xavier.
Third Benedict shared his view.
Xavier snorted laughing. "Yes right."
Strangely, there must be something going on here that I can't understand.
"What are you guys doing?" Ask me.
"Just look ahead, Sky," said Saul. "Come to the kitchen. Karla left us pizza."
There were more strange moments during the dinner preparation. It starts normally but then it goes to a strange thing.
Saul took over command of the sink and proved to be a competent salad chef. Xavier claims that Zed will spoil the pizza, so let him be in charge of the oven.
