"For a long time no news, once there is news even sad news, Storm!"
"By the way..the bin can too!"
"What if she's married?"
"No, ah! They're still dating but they're living together!"
The whispers came from the second or third row behind Evan.
Slowly their voices pierced the stillness of mourning Elijah, drawing his empty attention. He turned his eyes away from the rainwater hitting the high windows of their little church, and from the speech of the Denta guardians, Johan Maharaja-fathers of Evan.
From behind the sunglasses that covered part of his face, the look on Elijah's grieving face turned into shock, then became pure annoyance as the whispers continued.
He has spent the last two days in the fog, wallowing in grief and feeling so exhausted after weeks of struggle under the care of the dying Denta, until he managed to top the regional championship and at the same time he also lost Denta.
It was almost unbearable by Elijah.
And now, someone is gossiping about them, right in the middle of Denta's funeral.
You gossip mongrel! thought Elijah while still listening though a little annoyed.
"Still no virgin, do you think?"
It's none of your business at all! elijah's wrath in heart. Jaws crackling.
"What if he bunting pas left to die?"
"It's not like the cave doesn't mind changing the responsibilities of the Storm!"
Sounded giggling.
Hearing that, Elijah felt blood streaming down his face. His whole body stiffened or a little unsteady, he tried to maintain balance and hide his fists covered in his tangled handkerchief.
Evan grimaced at the innuendo. He tried to remember who Denta's friends were from among the racers who sat behind him. He then turned towards Elijah.
The posture of Elijah who was standing upright in front of the podium as if sitting on a wooden bench, convinced Evan that he also heard the impudent talk.
Slowly Evan turned his head and threw a sharp glare at the racers who were gossiping.
Two of them are women, the pair of drivers who like to upload selfies on racing motorcycles on social media, styled as if they were the drivers.
Evan's cold gaze hit them like a slap of ice that was exhaled by the Nordic wind.
The sound of a small laugh covered the embarrassment, and it did not surprise Elijah at all. He knows exactly how that look is.
When Evan turned back to the front with a face so calm, his smooth face looked like a marble mask, hard and white, in contrast to the mourning suit he wore. After dealing with the chaos behind, he glanced at Elijah with a triumphant cold gaze.
That's what a jerk is for! thought Evan.
Elijah responded with a faint smile, arguably a helpless smile. Then try to return his attention to the praise in the speech that Evan's father chanted, although it is actually difficult to digest diplomatic sentences about the dead man.
As the girl gets further absorbed in the void, the funeral procession has come to an end. The lovers of the racer who gossiped earlier had rushed out along with the accompaniment of the congregation, following the ranks of the corpse lifters who walked slowly with grim faces.
While the men convoyed on dirt bikes to accompany the body as a final tribute to the driver, the women boarded their family cars to shorten the journey to the Denta family residence, where Madame Tatiana offered a simple reception.
Elijah walked in a graceful dress, lifting the tip of his black skirt over a puddle of mud.
"Come, Eli!" Denta's mother called him. "We must prepare to welcome the guests."
Elijah did not move a bit to follow him. "I.." Elijah said stammeringly as he glanced at Evan who was pushing the dirt bike towards them. He actually wanted to ride on Evan's sidekick to convoy with others, but could not bear to express it after seeing the heartbreaking views thrown by Denta's mother.
"Sir Eden is like Mama, can replace him!" Evan defends Elijah while glancing meaningfully at his mother. "We're not long, really!"
"Let me watch by the door" Eden Hosea volunteered.
Denta's mother drew a doubt as she glanced at Eden, then looked at her haughty and unreliable yet kind brother-in-law.
"Oh, stop! Let them, Tatiana!" mother of Evan. "They can't be separated!"
Evan and Elijah glanced at each other, slightly blushing.
Denta's mother rolled her eyeballs. He took a quick glance at the line of dirt bikes that were getting away, then shrugged his shoulders. "Don't be long" he said. "Twenty minutes away, the house will be full of guests. I'm gonna need your help!"
Elijah and Evan nodded at the same time.
Elijah glanced at Eden with a gesture of gratitude, as Denta's mother turned to leave him.
Then Denta's mother and Evan's mother, along with the rest of the group, boarded the car driven by Eden Hosea, while Elijah climbed into Evan's motorbike.
While watching the trail bike ride slowly in the cemetery area, Elijah is pensively amazed at the rest of Denta's extraordinary life.
Her tears spread when she saw them lowering Denta's coffin into the ground, as the raindrops froze like a sprinkling of poplar flowers and dandelions. Like a special flower of heaven for Denta. Elijah's body staggered and almost collapsed in the arms of Evan who did not carelessly guard him.
On the way home, the rain somehow stopped miraculously, and Elijah felt the world around him as if it had come to a halt.
Silent.
He saw Evan smiling gently, saying something.
But Elijah did not hear any sound.
His body felt light, the world around him looked radiant and bright.
But the only thing he could see was Evan's face. He saw the man lunging towards him, shouting in slow motion.
He could feel the grip of Evan's hands on his back, holding him back.
But his body was like it was just floating in water, gliding slowly, away from Evan, creeping up in an invisible current.
A silhouette of a glowing white face greeted him overhead, smiling and shaking. Then turned to his back, revealing a pair of flaming wings and fluttering them until Elijah crashed.
Elijah squealed and nodded. Like out of the water. Then gasp and gasp.
The same face greeted him overhead.
Elijah flinched away from him. But his body wasn't as light as before. A pair of sturdy hands held both shoulders.
"Gee!"
The voice above his head sounded familiar. And Elijah began to remember who owned the glowing white face.
Evans!
The man leaned against the head of the bed, next to his feet became a pillow to support Elijah's head.
Elijah awoke full of fear and rose from his bed, spontaneously sweeping the entire room with a giddy look. His still blurred eyes gnashed open, his chest feeling heavy as his panicked gaze swept through the room.
At that moment he realized that he was in his old room, at Bang Wi's house.
