"My name is Elijah, Auntie!" Elijah told Denta's mother. "Call me El!"
"All right!" The middle-aged woman smiled. "El.." he said hesitantly. "May you know where you've been all this time?"
Elijah bowed and blushed. A little embarrassed by his circumstances. "In fact, I just wanted to find a place. Intention, I want to ask Denta to help me nemenin nyari kostan. I really don't know if he's sick anymore."
Denta's mother sipped her tea slowly, then put her cup back on the table. "You've come to the right place, El!" said enthusiastically. "Maybe it's no coincidence that you were met with Denta. We have a lot of empty rooms. And. We also have a pavilion in the back if you prefer to stay apart."
"But—"
"You can pay the rent if you feel guilty!" hatch mother Denta cut off Elijah's words. "But you know, I didn't expect that. I don't want to set a price. It is up to you to pay what rent. But make sure it's within your means!"
Elijah stumped and fondled.
Denta's mother touched his shoulder, "Not paying is okay either!" He adds.
It's not about paying rent, Elijah thought. But what does it mean that Denta needs you here? But somehow his mouth felt muddled, unable to find the right words to describe his worries.
"Tomorrow morning, I help you tidy up the pavilion!" said Mother Denta excited.
"But, Auntie—" Elijah stuttered again.
"Do you want to choose a room in here?" Mother Denta offers.
Elijah shook his head quickly. "I'm really not good, Aunt."
"Why?" Denta's mother groaned disappointed. "You haven't worked?" He asked again.
Elijah nodded again. "I just started college."
"Then listen to me!" Denta's mother touched his shoulder again. "Just think about how your parents worked so hard for you to go to college, and that includes thinking about the monthly rent, not to mention your daily needs. Imagine somewhere else you are being charged every month and must not be late. Here, you just need to focus on studying and accompanying Denta."
Elijah went silent. This core?
Accompanying Denta?
Or treating?
As if he could read Elijah's mind, Denta's mother finally came to light. "Since Denta met you, his life spirit has begun to rise. Know, El. Denta has long been slumped without the spirit of life. I know it can't help him heal. But at least you can help him enjoy life" he said grimly.
Elijah gulped and licked his lower lip. "The truth is." he said hesitantly. "What pain talent?"
"Don't worry, El! My disease should not be contagious!" Denta suddenly appeared and interrupted their conversation, he stood tilted against his shoulder on the door frame while cross-legged. His face looked much fresher even though it remained pale.
He recovered in an instant, his mother thought in amazement.
Elijah stuttered and smiled uneasily, then bowed awkwardly, "That's not what I worry about," he said. Then he went back to silence, not wanting to offend the guy.
"Look, I won't die until I see you on the circuit!" Denta.
"Denta!" Elijah groaned and glared at him. Why is he talking about that, anyway? Guilt came back to him.
"Still not accepting Mama's offer?" Denta.
"Don't want to accept it" said Elijah. "Gue.. I just don't want to take any more perepotin! Denta, we've only met twice, and I've had your nicotine twice!"
Denta smiled at his mother while pulling his shoulder from the door frame, then stepped slowly towards the dining table and bowed in front of Elijah. "Where are you going to replace it?" he asked half a challenge. "Now I want to take care of you. We exchange profits! You're my free nurse, and I give you a free ride. How's it?"
Elijah sighed and smiled widely. Somehow he could not resist the charm of the man even though his face was very pale. "Okay, deal!" he said, extending his hand.
Denta shook his hand and smiled back. "Deal!" he said enthusiastically, then glanced at his mother.
His mother sighed in relief and smiled widely. "It's dinner time, kids!" exclaims jolly.
Time had already shown at six when they started eating while having a light conversation.
"Do you like soup?" Denta's mother asked Elijah.
Elijah stuttered and smiled wryly. "Ng-no, Auntie! Not not disliked. Just no longer interested. Eat soup.. make me want someone," he said frankly.
"Your mother?" guess Denta's mom.
No, Elijah said in his heart. But of course he had no intention of telling the truth.
"You've only been gone a few hours from home, and you've missed your mother?" Denta's mother chuckled and shook her head.
Denta glanced at Elijah through the corner of his eye. Suddenly remember the girl once said she was from Rangkasbitung but took a bus headed for Sukabumi when she came home.
"My mother is dead" Elijah said.
"Oh, sori!" sorry Denta's mother.
Elijah smiled at the woman. "Father, Auntie!" said. "That's been a long time!"
"So yesterday when you came home who took care of your feet?" denta's mother asked as if echoing Denta's thoughts.
"My aunt" answered Elijah. "I didn't go home today."
Oh, so it looks! thought Denta. I felt ridiculous about his suspicions. Unknowingly, he smiled faintly.
The next day…
Early in the morning Denta woke up and invited Elijah to jog. He looks much fitter despite remaining pale and still wears a high-necked— shirt even when he is wearing a training suit.
What's he covering behind that high collar? Elijah's curious. But I didn't have the courage to ask.
On returning home, the man led him to the garage, took his motorcycle out into the yard and heated the engine.
He still takes good care of her, Elijah thought concernedly. It must be hard to break the habit that has been ingrained. He knows exactly how it feels to be forced to give up something that is already part of him.
Now I know why he stopped, he thought bitterly.
Unlike her who gave up due to heartbreak, Denta stopped because the condition of her body is no longer possible.
Denta's right!
Elijah gave up not because he felt untalented, but because he felt meaningless in Evan's eyes.
"Where do you think?"
Denta's question rattled Elijah from his daydream.
"What?" elijah asked half stuttered. I don't know what Denta is talking about.
"My motor is still bad, right?" denta asked half-challenged.
Elijah brandished his thumb and forced a smile, trying to look enthusiastic.
"Wanna try?" Denta turned his head slightly towards his motorcycle, posing a challenge again.
Elijah gulped and smiled clumsily. Not sure of his feelings. There was bitterness that slipped in between his heart as he tried to imagine himself back riding a motorcycle tail.
Memories of his uncle offering the same challenge, who then sends himself to Evan, and brings him to this point, everything flashed like a long film shot showing all the pieces of important events that he could not forget.
Denta watched Elijah with his eyes squinted. Then let out a short sigh and stepped slowly closer to the girl. Then cleared his throat, preparing to begin his powerful sermon, "Speed may have its limits, El!" said straightforward. "But hope should not!"
