Hamra’ul Asad and the Obedience of Friends
The sun began to set as they entered Medina. Fatigue on top of fatigue on the face. Sword wounds, spear thrusts and wounds caused by enemy arrows stuck in the body drained blood. Rosulullah Shallallahu ‘Alaihi Wassallam's fractured right hand as well as his injured right hand from fending off a blow aimed at his head still leaves a tremendous pain. The sorrow over the death of seventy companions adds to the pain suffered by the Muslims in the Battle of Uhud.
Not enough eyes were closed to break from the rigors of the war, fresh blood was still flowing from the bandaged wounds. Suddenly in the silence of the morning Bilal announces that the enemy must be pursued. The commander required orders that those who had been with him were those who had participated in the previous Battle of Uhud.
Tholhah ibn Ubaidillah met Rosulullah, confirming his departure. He found him ready on his horse saddle at the mosque door, complete with a steel hat covering all of his face except his eyes. Without a second thought Tholhah immediately ran towards her horse and immediately prepared herself.
Among the people of the Banu Salimah who were ready to take the cry of Allah and Rosulullah there were forty wounded soldiers, even among them there were more than ten pierced arrows. Their soul strength exceeded their body strength. Rosulullah prayer immediately came out of his mouth when checking the ranks of the troops, “Yes Allah, bless the Banu Salimah!”
The army led directly by Rosulullah stopped at the Battle of Hamra’ul Asad, about eight miles from Medina, not far from the enemy in front of them who had been camped for some time in Rawha. The enemies wait for the right time to finish off the Muslims to their roots.
At Hamra’ul Asad, Rosulullah ordered his troops to spread and collect as much dry wood as possible. Everyone piles it up in their own pile. When the sun goes down, they can prepare more than five hundred fireplaces and light them when night falls.
Three days they were in Hamra’ul Asad confronted the enemy with gaping wounds, devising a strategy that frightened the enemy. The flames were very much scattered in the vast area as if showing the size of the troops that were camping there. This impression was conveyed to Abu Sufyan who made him and his people shrewd and fled to Makkah.
[Officacy of No Appeal]
(i.e.,) those who obey the commandments of God and His Rosule after they have been wounded. For those who do good and fear Allah there is a great reward. (i.e.,) those who if anyone says to them “indeed man has gathered an army to attack you, then fear”, their faith increased and they answered”, Allah is sufficient to be our helper, and he is the best protector.” [QS Ali Imron(3): 172-173]
Both of the above verses are revealed with regard to the War of Hamra’ul Asad. Although there was no physical contact, the exit of Rosulullah and the companions to confront the enemy and show that they did not hesitate in the least to face Abu Sufyan and his troops at Hamra’ al-Asad counted as a war, as said by Ibn Kathir in the interpretation of Quranul Adzim.
⁇ ️Hamra’ul Asad is a story of the courage and toughness of Rosulullah and his noble companions. Hamra’ul Asad bears witness to an unequaled obedience, a witness to a love that has never been extinguished in various circumstances. Pain, fatigue, fatigue, grief that is not only felt by the physical but also mentally burdening do not make them ignore when the call of jihad is proclaimed. What a picture of obedience that makes themselves more dwarfed when compared to them.
Today, when the soul is filled with love for matter, when physical pain and slight fatigue are used as reasons for the restraint of many virtues and the cessation of the call of dawah, their story in preaching the call of the ribath makes shameful.
Hamra’ul Asad teaches us a obedience to God and His Rosul that does not require any reason. It teaches us that trust is to give up the results to God after obedience. Hamra’ul Asad an example of impeccable obedience.
Wallahua’lam.
