People may know this building by the name of Lawang Sewu, but you know if it is not the real name of Lawang Sewu. At the beginning of its construction, the building was named Nederlands Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij. While in Javanese, Lawang Sewu means a thousand doors.


But just because the name is "Lawang Sewu", does not mean this building really has a thousand doors. In fact, Lawang Sewu only has 429 doors. But if the number of door holes, totaling 928. Unlike now, Lawang Sewu used to be the administrative office of Indische Spoorweg Maatscappij (NIS), a private railway company from Netherland. The first NIS office was at Semarang station, but because the place was insufficient, the Dutch government finally decided to build a new building.
