Diah looked down next to Doddy, as the car rolled down the crowded highway, Diah not a word opened his voice.
"What did your mother tell you?" Doddy asked carefully, though his feelings were broken but he still could not help but ask.
Diah did not answer only the sound of her stuffing that had been stifled suddenly sounded even though as hard as she seemed to try to hold it, it made Doddy feel like he was stabbed.
"Why are you crying? mama said something rude to you?" Asked Doddy again in a row, he was so anxious that his mother had treated Diah badly, or at least his mother had rejected him in a subtle way, but still it must have hurt Diah.
Diah shook his head firmly, then raised his face staring at the highway.
"Your mother is the best woman in the world, I never found anyone as wise as her until I met her tonight. You are the luckiest child, because God made him your guardian in this world." Diah rubbed her cheeks with the back of her hand, in the dim reflection of the light of the car lights that passed her tears glistened silvery.
"But why did you cry from earlier, mama said anything? He rejected you? Did you blatantly say that you didn't approve of us? Did she offend because..because maybe your status as a widow? Is....?"
"It seems you should listen to your parents." Diah interrupted before Doddy continued the questions he asked in a huffed tone.
"You mean?" Doddy almost braked his car suddenly, hearing Diah's words.
"Parents are the ones who know the most about us, they also will not be tired in giving advice to children to avoid bad things. Your mom and dad did the same thing, they love you more than anything in the world." He spoke without looking at the man beside him.
"Diah, you don't have to defend mom and dad if they disagree with us. I'll talk to my mom and dad again.I'll make them understand that I'm a grown man, it's not a kid that can't tell which is good and which isn't good for me?" Doddy hesitantly grabbed Diah's fingers, as if to give her strength but she avoided him.
"There's nothing wrong with their questions, there's nothing wrong with us. Parents always have a way to advise us but we often close our ears.
After today I realized, as children we are often so selfish.
They just ask and want to be sure, but our attitude of resistance is as if we deserve to judge their opinion. They're just worried about us, there's nothing wrong with that." Diah tried to bring up a faint smile, for some reason her tears still came out.
"If there is nothing wrong then why do they seem to oppose our holy intentions? Is it because you're a widow, a stumbling block to give your blessing? is that the image of women who have failed in marriage? Anyone would not want it to happen, let alone the failure is not from your side, why do you have to bear it? Is being a widow a disgrace? You've been married and failed, it's not your fault! You have children and not single women anymore, isn't that a life choice? Then when I chose you, I felt able to accept whatever it was about you.
Diah, do I sin if I love you? Did choosing you as the person I wanted the most was a mistake?" Doddy never spoke this much, but word for word it just slid from his mouth. Seemed upset and angry, but didn't know who to take it out on.
Diah doesn't answer anything, she only speaks a thousand languages because Diah himself doesn't have the answers to all of Doddy's questions.
They were silent, silent for so long, passing through two red lights, they still did not talk to each other. It seemed like they were dissolving in each other's thoughts.
Upon entering the apartment yard, Doddy stopped his car in the parking area. And stopping there, Doddy did not turn to Diah, but when Diah tried to open the car door was about to get out, the door was locked by Doddy.
"We need to talk in a minute." Doddy said in a flat tone.
Diah turned to Doddy and his hand was still on the doorknob, stunned at the man who was now cold and angry in his suddenly gloomy face.
"I cannot accept that if they reject you just because of your status, because the one who has the right to judge you from that side is me who will live with you not them or anyone else." Doddy's voice is so flat.
"What can you do? Parents' words are the first thing to hear. Marriage is not just about you and me, it is about acceptance from both parties, including your family. If you were me, would you be prepared to be ignored after marriage? Or do you think it is easier to accept the pain of rejection at the beginning, accepting it with full awareness that maybe we are not the expected partner. Which one is sicker?" Diah now turned his body to face Doddy who was like freezing in front of the steering wheel.
"I don't want you to feel hurt!"
"If we don't want me to get hurt, then follow all your parents' requests."
"How can I obey them if it's about you, about the person to whom I entrust my future. How could you ask me that?"
Diah bit her lips, her hands trembled squeezing the bag on her lap, those eyes gleaming again in dimness.
"I'm fine if it's to keep you good in everyone's eyes." The sentence was heard saying Diah trembling, a thousand words seemed to be spoken to Doddy but he only tried his hardest to hold it.
"Advice is a form of infinite compassion that our parents give us. Maybe we will take some parental advice for granted, but someday you will realize that their words will lead you to happiness. Remember me when you get to that point, where you're grateful to listen to your parents more than yourself." Diah threw away her face, but Doddy grabbed her hand, she who had always been careful and tried not to touch Diah, now pulled Diah's fingers with a firm gesture.
"I..." Doddy stared at Diah sharply, clutching Diah's tightly clenched hand.
"Am I wrong if I now doubt that you have the same feelings as me? When I hear you say this, I'm not sure you love me as much as I love you. Why am I. I feel that I'm just struggling myself..."
