"Later to buy." said Prasta and Dika simultaneously.

The woven fabric produced by the villagers of Tenganan Village is known as Gringsing Fabric. Woven cloth typical of the people of Tenganan Village is very famous even worldwide. The technique uses double ikat technique, which is known as the only weaving technique in Indonesia.

"You wait here, Ra" said Dika

"Where are you going?" much

"Finding weaving for you" said Dika

"Later saka, let's look at the crowd" I said

We headed straight to where people were crowding. At that time it was not covid.so it was still safe for a get-together. Hehe...

"What are they doing anyway?" much

"Pandan War" said Mas Arya

"Huh?" ask us compact

Every year there will be a pandan war (mageret pandan tradition). This tradition is very unique that a pair of village youths hit each other using thorns on pandan leaves. The leaves of this prickly pandanus are smashed over their backs until they are injured and bleed.

"We are lucky here, to this village when there is a pandan war event." said Gusde

"We are also curious" said Ivan and Dika

"It's not that you guys fight a lot" my god

"Beda neng" said Ivan

Pandan War is an ancient tradition and is only owned by an ancient Balinese village in Tenganan Village, Karangasem, Bali. Balinese people usually refer to this tradition as mekare-kare and megeret pandan. This tradition is the ritual of Sasih Sembah, which is the largest ritual performed to honor the God Indra or God of War.

Pandan war, which is the real difference that makes Bali Aga villages, especially Tenganan Village, whose culture is different from others. The difference lies in worship, because the people of Bali Aga are devotees of Dewa Inda as the main God.

Some Balinese people who come from the Majapahit tribe who became the main God is Lord Shiva. In addition, they can also see the difference in the temple, they also do not know the “kasta” system as well as other Balinese Hindus.

"The village is very unique, they have their own holidays" said Gusde

"meaning?" ask Satria

"When other Balinese Hindu communities carry out Nyepi Day in Tenganan village and villages with Bali Aga Balinese people do not celebrate Nyepi Tradition." said Mas Arya

"Then?" ask Prasta

"This is the tradition of pandan war is a celebration in this village" said Gusde.

We then tried to break into the crowded human crowd to watch this war.

"The history of this pandan war how is it?" ask me curious

"For the early history of how this pandan war ended up being a hereditary tradition, starting from a despotic and very cruel king ruled the people of Bali Aga long before the arrival of the majapahit people to the island of Bali" said Gusde began his story

"It means before Majapahit comes. Bali has its own king?" ask Ivan

"Of course" I said

Arya then continued the story of pandan war. He knows about this story, because it is in 1 district.

"The king was named Maya Denawa, because Maya Denawa had extraordinary devotion that made her as a god forbid people to worship the god Indra. Because the community felt that King Maya Denawa was out of bounds then the community was begging God Indra to free them from the cruelty of Maya Denawa" said Mas Arya

So the god Indra came down to the world to defeat the arrogant Mayan king Denawa. In the end Maya Denawa was defeated for her arrogance. Since then the people of Tenganan commemorate the death of Maya Denawa.

"They carry out the tradition of pandan war every year to recall their freedom at the cruelty of Maya King Denawa and to honor the god Indra who is also known by the Hindu community as the god of war." sahut Gusde's.

My mind then drifted to Tirta Mpul. Same story with Maya Denawa.

"Is it something to do with Tirta Empul?" much

"This pandan war participant is from the village youth here, right?" ask Ivan

In the tradition of pandan war is always done by the youth of Tenganan village. Pandan War is used as a benchmark for a person can be considered an adult because it has the courage to conduct pandan war.

The weapon used in this panda war tradition is to use pandan as the main weapon. The pandan used is a prickly pandan. Participants are also allowed to carry a shield made of rattan woven and the rules are quite simple.

Persons who fight or duel will be selected by the jury in accordance with their posture. Usually pandan wars will start in the morning to invoke safety and smoothness of events. And continued by dance - dance to entertain the tourists and then ended with joint treatment - the same between participants to treat the scars and scars from the wounds caused when they did the panda war.

"It means almost the same as the tradition of rock jumping in Nias" said Dika

"Yes, the young man who is considered to be an adult must pass through the stone. Same thing with here. The youth must also conduct pandan war." said Mas Putu.

"After the war, what about their wounds?" ask Satria

"Are they in a state of confusion?" ask Dika

"They are aware, but yes it was before the war was done they will pray first in the temple. Ask for salvation to God Indra to bless this war" said Gusde.

Pandan war tradition, done by using prickly pandan as a tool or weapon to fight. Prickly bunches used are pandan that have been tied so that it is shaped like a mace. Pandan war participants also use a shield. The shield is used to protect themselves from the opponent's attack. Tameng used in pandan war is made of woven rattan.

"Duuh must be very sick." I said when I saw the young man's skin scratched with a thorny pandanus.

"Yes, but said one of the men as the war progressed. They do not feel anything." said Mas Arya.

"That's what gamelan?" ask Prasta

"Selonding his name." said Mas Arya.

Pandan war accompanied by gamelan selonding music. Seloding is a musical instrument in the Tenganan area that should only be played by consecrated people. This musical instrument is also not arbitrarily played, but only at certain events. The tool has a prohibition that should not be violated that is not allowed to touch the ground.

"Truly sacred is this tradition, amazing" said Satria.

"That is the greatness of Bali, always amazes everything" said Gusde proudly

"Oh yes, the clothes are very good." muttered Prasta

"Pandan war participants wear Tenganan custom clothing called Pegringsingan woven cloth. Men only use sarongs or called kamen, shawl or called broom, and headband or udeng. The man did not wear shirt alias bare-chested." said Mas Putu

"So how did you go about this pandan war procession?" manya curious.

"I'll explain." said Mas Arya

Pandan war ceremony is preceded by surrounding the village as a form of salvation request to the God. After surrounding the village, then continued the ritual of drinking wine together. The tuak is then collected together and thrown next to the stage.

Indigenous stakeholders will give signs of war began.War is carried out in pairs, namely a number of two people. Pandan war participants will dance and occasionally beat prickly pandan on other participants as deep as one minute and then take turns with other couples. Even though his body was bleeding, the participants still looked happy because it was one of their expressions of gratitude and a way of respecting God Indra.

"Thereafter they'll be treated, right?" much

"After the war was over wounded participants were smeared with a traditional herb made from turmeric. The next event after the war was to pray in pure. Although the participants were injured but there was no grudge among the participants. This is symbolized by eating together which shows togetherness. The event is called hoisting." said Mas Arya.

After being satisfied with the pandan war show. We also headed to a house.

"Why you?" ask Dika to me

"I'm so dizzy." I said
