CHAPTER 41: OPENING THE HEART
The two friends are still. Iko was still waiting for the answer to be said from the mouth of the woman who was standing before him.
“I can't, Ko.” The woman answered briefly. Immediately Iko's heart froze hearing that answer. The answer remains the same as before.
“Why, Ga? Why is it so hard for you to open your heart to me? How unattractive am I in your eyes?”
“Not so, Ko.”
“Lantas why?”
Both are silent again. The woman seemed to have difficulty regulating the rhythm of the breath, no matter what the cause.
“You know? It wasn't easy for me to open my heart again after everything that happened to me. I'm too scared to start again.”
The man smiled bitterly.
“Evan used to precede me to get your love. Now, he's the one who made you not open your heart to me anymore. Damn it my fate has to face the son of a bitch.”
The woman just bowed. His smile was bitter considering all the events that had befallen his household life.
“I am just a woman who failed in maintaining a household. My husband left with another woman, and stupidly I didn't know.”
Ega again sighed deeply, throwing it into the sky, before finally looking back into the eyes of the man.
“What do you expect from a widow like me, Iko? You can even date two or three beautiful women at once with the popularity you have today.”
“I can do it if I want. But I'm not Evan, Ga. I'm not Evan capable of such a thing.”
Both were again silenced by silence. The eyes clashed with each other, without a word.
“My feeling stops at you, Ga. I can't love another woman but you. Long ago, even today. I was never able to open my heart to another woman, even when I accepted the fact that you already have a companion in life.”
Ega simply fell silent without even uttering a word.
“How else should I prove my sincere feelings for you, Ega?”
The woman simply stared at the man who slowly walked up to her, then grabbed her palms.
“Let me love you, Ega. For the umpteenth time I ask you.”
The brown eyeballs are now glazed. Clearly implied fear of failure in the past again overshadowed it.
The woman could no longer continue her words. Her tears are breaking. Clearly the man was able to see the fear in the twinkle of his eyes that looked increasingly real.
“Trust me. I will be your protector,” said the man reassured. His long fingers brushed off Ega's tears that were getting louder. The woman closed her eyes holding back what felt tight in her chest.
“It's not about me, Iko. It's about you. It will be difficult for you to be with me,” said the woman with her half-restrained sobs.
“I don't care, Ga. I don't care if I have to lose anything. As long as it's not lost you.”
The woman was unable to give an answer. The man looked back at him closely, then slowly landed a kiss on the red lips of the woman who was still covered in tears in front of him. Both are dissolved in feelings that have always been hindered by circumstances. Iko then grabbed the body of the woman who was still wrapped in the dress, holding it full of warmth.
“I love you, Ega. I promise I will always protect you.”
The woman sobbed in Iko's arms for a while.
“Can I ask you one thing, Iko?”
The question immediately made Iko let go of his embrace and then looked back at Ega fixedly.
“Anything,”
“I don't want others to know about this relationship.”
“What?”
The man was a little surprised.
“But why, Ga? Why hide?”
“I don't want my presence to interfere with your career path.”
“Ega, I told you I don't care about it,-
“Can ‘kan?” Ega interrupted Iko's unfinished words. It was as if the man wanted to rebel, shouting to the whole world that the woman before him had now accepted his love, but the man did not know what to do.
