Thanks to his power, Bandung Bondowoso managed to defeat and kill Prabu Baka. When Patih Gupala heard the news of his lord's death, he immediately fled, returning to the kingdom of Baka. When the patih arrived at the Baka Palace, he immediately reported the news of Prabu Baka's death to Princess Rara Jongrang. The princess mourned the death of her father.
After the Baka kingdom fell into the power of Pengging, Prince Bandung Bondowoso stormed into the Baka Palace. At his first meeting with Princess Rara Jonggrang, Bandung Bondowoso was immediately captivated by the beauty of the princess. He falls in love and proposes to the princess, but her proposal is rejected, because the princess does not want to marry her father's killer and the invaders of her country. Because Bandung Bondowoso continued to persuade and force, finally the princess was willing to be edited, but with two conditions that are impossible to be granted. The first condition is the manufacture of wells called Jalatunda wells. The second requirement is the construction of a thousand temples in just one night. Bandung Bondowoso supports both conditions.
The prince managed to finish the well of Jalatunda thanks to his magic. After the well was finished, Rara Jonggrang tried to trick the prince into coming down into the well and inspect it. After Bandung Bondowoso descended, the princess ordered Gupala to close and stockpile the well with stones. However, Bandung Bondowoso managed to get out by breaking the pile of stones thanks to his magic.
Bondowoso was angry, but soon calmed down because of the beauty and persuasion of the princess, ehm the story continues, and dedemit from the bowels of the Earth. With the help of this delicate creature, the prince successfully completed 999 temples.
When Rara Jonggrang heard that a thousand temples were almost finished, the princess tried to thwart Bondowoso's duties. Thinking that the morning has come and soon the sun will rise, the subtle creatures run away in fear hiding back into the bowels of the Earth. According to this story, the site of Ratu Baka near Prambanan is the palace of Prabu Baka, while the 999 unfinished temples are now known as Candi Sewu, and the Durga statue in the northern room of the main temple in Prambanan is the embodiment of the princess who was cursed into stone and remains remembered as Lara Jonggrang which means "slender girl".
