Banff National Park runs northwest to southeast along the Canadian Rocky Mountain line between Alberta and British Columbia. Its terrain is mostly steep and mountainous, consisting mostly of high mountain peaks in parts of the Rocky Mountains, particularly in its western part along the Continental Divide . Most of the rest of the land is designated as subalpine or mountainous landscapes and is located in the Front Ranges. The mountains in this region consist of limestone, shale, and other sedimentary rocks and have a tooth-like appearance resulting from glaciation. Many peaks rise above 10,000 feet (3,050 meters), including the Columbia Mountains on the park's western border in the Ten Peaks Region, which reaches 11,365 feet (3,464 meters), and the Sir Douglas Mountains at its southeastern end, it is 11,175 feet (3,406 meters) high. Banff contains active glaciers, including a portion of the vast Columbia Icefield to the north, and mountainous wetlands and grasslands, such as the Bow and Red Deer river valleys . The park is also famous for its beautiful alpine lakes, particularly Lake Louise, stretching northeast from Mount Columbia, and, not far south, the Morain Lake .

The region has a cool mountainous climate that varies greatly with location and altitude. Summer is quite warm, with daytime highs in July and August around 72 °F (22 °C) in Banff city and often accompanied by thunderstorms in the afternoon. Winters are long, snowy, and cold, with nighttime lows reaching around 5 °F (−15 °C) in January; periodic cold shots can send temperatures much lower. Snow generally falls from late September to May, with a total seasonal accumulation of about 10 feet (3 meters).
