Mount Merapi is a mountain located in 2 different provinces, namely in Central Java and Yogyakarta. This mountain is located side by side with Mount Merbabu. Mount Merapi is one of the volcanoes that has a high destructive power and is the most active among the many volcanoes located in Indonesia and is one of the fiercest mountains in the world.
The height of Mount Merapi itself reaches 2930 meters above sea level, the altitude is based on measurements in 2010. Its most famous peak name is Garuda peak, but the peak of the Garuda has been lost due to the eruption of merapi in (2010) which is a large chunk of rock with a shape similar to a bird garuda. One of the distinctive features of Mount Merapi is that at the time of the eruption produced hot clouds (glowing avalanches), which the locals called Wedus Gembel. The community gave the designation based on the form of hot clouds that resemble goat/sheep feathers. This hot cloud has a temperature of about 1,000 degrees Celsius.
Although this mountain is called the fiercest mountain in the world, but Mount Merapi is almost never empty of climbers. Even on Sundays or holidays a lot of climbers come. To reach the top of Mount Merapi you can pass two main routes, namely Kinaharjo/Kaliurang and Selo/Boyolali. But in November 1995 the Kaliurang hiking trail was temporarily closed.

Arrival of Mount Merapi climbing post in Selo Village. Selo Village is the main climbing gate located at an altitude of 1,560 meters above sea level. Selo Village is located in the area of Mount Merapi and Mount Merbabu. This village has a beautiful natural panorama because of its strategic location. The villagers mostly farm vegetables and tobacco. In this village there is also a cave tourist spot that has a hermitage place located 300 meters from the Selo Police Post.
After arriving at the gate of Selo Village, the climbers can continue the journey on foot to the climbing basecamp in Plalangan hamlet with a travel time of about 15 minutes. The road that will be passed is a fairly uphill asphalt road. In the middle of the journey they will pass a small post like a hansip post, where climbers can report the climb with the cost of retribution of climbing Mount Merapi. Along the way you will pass – houses and fields of residents.

Joglo is a joglo house-shaped building that is commonly used by visitors to enjoy the scenery around. The climbers can see the beautiful Mount Merbabu clearly from this place.
This place has been seen from the highway because there is a billboard or large writing that says “NEW SELO”. At first glance it looks like the symbol of Hollywood in America. This baliho has a high creativity element from the maker. There is also a parking lot that can accommodate up to 6 cars and warung–warung that sells food and soft drinks. Usually, this – stall is only open until the afternoon, except during the climbing season.
From Joglo, the climbers can continue the journey through a small path that is beside this place to the post Tugu I. The path that climbers will pass is still dominated by populated fields with small rock fields and soil that in the dry season will be very dusty should use masks and long sleeves to keep the body from dust flying. There are many branching trails along the hiking trail, but the branching ends on the same trail. The climbers can choose which path is comfortable to pass. In Post Tugu I there is a monument located on a ridge. The height of the monument is about 1.5 meters.
From Pos I the journey continues to Pos Tugu II, with a steep path and full of large rocks. The journey to this post takes about 1.5 – 2 hours. In this post there is also a monument, just like in the previous post. From here you only need about 1 hour to go to the bubrah market. The climbing terrain is still similar to the previous climbing terrain. On the way to the bubrah market you will pass a few memoriam located on a plain that became the top of a ridge. From this place the climbers only need to go down to the bubrah market. The bubrah market is in a valley filled with rocks – large stones scattered. From Bubrah Market, there are 2 peaks and there is a path to reach the Woro crater.
From Bubrah Market to the top takes about 1 hour with a very steep and sandy path. The terrain they face is sand and rocky that easily landslides. Climbing from the cello to the top of Mount Merapi will take 5 – 6 hours and when descending takes 3 – 4 hours per street. Until they finally reached the top of the mountain.
The scenery at Puncak Merapi is amazing and terrible, the rumbling of craters and smoke and rock cliffs around the creepy Merapi crater. From this peak they can see the city of – cities located at the foot of the mountain such as Yogyakarta, Boyolali and Magelang. They are lucky this time, they can see the sunrise with a reddish color in the east which is a truly amazing natural panorama.
