Malin Kundang Folklore
Folklore originating from the region of Sumatra is about a family who had a child named Malin Kundang. The condition of the family is so lacking that the father wanders to other regions.
Unfortunately, the father did not come home until Malin and his mother were left alone. When he was an adult, Malin chose to migrate to become a rich man. However, while on a wandering trip, his ship was attacked by pirates so he and his colleagues were stranded in a village.
Fortunately, the village was so fertile that Malin managed to become rich. Finally Malin returned to his homeland, his mother who saw there was a boat anchored immediately approached Malin with enthusiasm. Unfortunately, Malin pretended not to recognize his mother because of the shame of having a mother in dirty clothes. As a result, his mother prayed, "My Lord, if he really is my son, I curse him to be a stone." It was then that strong winds and storms destroyed Malin's ship and Malin slowly turned into a rock.
The Lake Toba Folklore
The next folklore tells about the life of a farmer who diligently worked and lived alone. Her life changes when she discovers a magical fish that can transform into a beautiful princess cursed into a fish.
In return, she wanted to be made the farmer's wife on condition that she could not tell and mention the origin of the princess of a fish. If it is broken, there will be a terrible disaster.
Once upon a time, there lived a lonely old widow named Sarni. One day he went to the forest to look for wood. But, he meets a giant who wants a child for his meal. Then, Sarni says he has no children so the giant gives the cucumber seeds and says that he will have children later. And, Sarni had to give her son when she was 6 years old.
After 2 weeks, one of the cucumbers looks very big. Sarni breaks it and finds a baby girl. He ended up living with a beautiful girl named Timun Mas. One day, a giant comes to collect a promise and Sarni prevents it by reasoning the more mature it will be the better it tastes. The giant finally approved Sarni's statement.
At that time, Sarni dreamed that his son, Timun Mas was asked to meet a hermit on the mountain and Timun Mas finally met a hermit and got four small packages of cucumber seeds, needles, salt, and a half, and terasi. Cucumber Mas are asked to throw one by one when chased by giants. When the giant returns to take Cucumber Mas, Sarni offers to be eaten because he does not want to lose the child he has raised.
The giants eventually pursue Timun Mas and Timun Mas following the ascetic's advice to throw cucumber seeds. On the first throw the giant experienced a constraint of the winding cucumber plants. Second, he sowed needles that grew into sharp and tall bamboo trees, after which sowed salt and the sea appeared. Unfortunately, the giant was still chasing him until Timun Mas threw his last parcel. He also survived a sea of boiling mud that ensnared the giant.
The Stone of Crying Folk Story
The next folklore comes from Kalimantan, which tells about the relationship of mother and child. The child has a beautiful face but has a bad and spoiled nature. One day the mother and her son went to the village to shop. However, on the way many people asked who was walking behind him. First, his son replied that his mother was his maid. Second he answered that his mother was his slave. This is done repeatedly by the child.
That made the mother unable to hear the child's answer so she prayed that her child would be punished. The child was then turned into stone until half of the body was cursed. His son asked his mother for forgiveness. However, he eventually turned into a crying stone.5. Telaga Bidadari Folklore
In a lake inhabited by a handsome man named Awang Sukma. He lives alone and loves to look for birds. But, one day the atmosphere was quiet and not a single bird perched.
One day, he heard a roar of people talking which turned out to be from 7 angels who were playing water in the lake. The clouds went to the lake and took one of the clothes from the angel. As they were about to return home, an angel looked uneasy from not finding her clothes. Awan approached and offered to stay in his house until they were married and had a child named Kumalasari. The secret was revealed and finally the angel chose to return to the world of heaven following his brothers.
