Mount Kachi-kachi ( ⁇ Kachi-kachi yama) is a Japanese folklore about rabbits who punish tanuki for killing their rabbit-friend's grandmother.
The word "kachi-kachi" is an onomatopoeia of the sound of a flint that Japanese hearing says "kachi-kachi". The original version of the story was considered too cruel, so it circulated a more subtle version of the story. Other versions are also often replaced with the grandmother who did not die, and at the end of the story, the rabbit helps the tanuki who almost drowned and lived together. Even if the original rabbit and tanuki versions are not named, the adaptation version of Shogo Hirata published by PT Elex Media Komputindo, each animal character is named Pinky (tanuki) and Pindy (rabbit).
In the past, there lived a couple of grandparents. Every time grandfather works in the fields, tanuki comes distracting with singing. The lyrics of the song sung by tanuki contain a curse for the harvest to fail. Not only that, tanuki also dig and eat yam seeds that are planted by grandfather in the field. Grandpa was furious and set a trap. Tanuki got into a trap, tied up, and brought home. After being put in the kitchen, grandfather returned to the fields. Grandma who met tanuki in the kitchen agreed to take it off, because it had been lied to tanuki who promised to help clean up the house. After being released, Tanuki instead beat up grandma and killed her. The granny's meat is cooked tanuki into soup. Grandfather's return from the field was greeted by tanuki who had changed into the grandmother. Grandpa ate soup served "grandmother" with delicious. After the soup was eaten, "grandmother" again changed into tanuki form and told everything. Laughing, tanuki returned to the mountain.
After successfully burning the tanuki's back, the rabbit visited the tanuki who was suffering from burns. Tanuki was given mustard which the rabbit said was a burn medicine ointment. Mustard applied to burns on the tanuki's back makes the tanuki more painful.
At the end of the story, tanuki invited the rabbit to go fishing in the lake. The boat on which the rabbit rode was made of wood, but the tanuki was given a boat made of mud. Exposed to water, the mud boat became soft and sank. Tanuki swam with all his might to the edge, but was beaten by a rabbit with a paddle and drowned to death.
