“My guy? Meaning Higgins was killed?” Jose is creepy again. He looked straight at his uncle's black eyes. “He wasn't attacked by a wild animal?”
“Rolan said that so you wouldn't worry. So you don't feel guilty or anything.” Marco walked over to check the door, making sure that it was sealed shut. “It looks like the opposite is happening, right? You blame yourself.”
Jose turned his face away, embarrassed that he could be read clearly by Marco. “Soal Higgins,” he said slowly. “Whose culprit? Already caught?”
Marco returned to Jose's front, now sitting on the sofa opposite the young man. His eyes stared carefully, weighing. “You know that Higgins' blood runs out.”
“Yes. Doctor Rolan said, There are wild animals or something. A kind of blood-sucking bat.”
“There are no such animals in this region.” Marco said grimly. “Binatang has its own distribution area, Jose.”
“Ya, I know,” said Jose annoyed. He was always irritated whenever Marco used a patronizing tone on him. “What does Uncle mean by the same? How did Uncle know? Those who are lost are never found."
“Some found.”
Jose frowned. "Never heard the news."
“No, this is serious. Listen carefully and do not cut. Also don't tell anyone, not even Maria Garnet.”
Jose had no choice but to nod.
Marco was silent for a long time, then made a face full of determination as if he had just decided on a big thing in his head. He leaned his body forward, towards Jose. Voice lowered. “Those missing people," he said carefully. "They were all also found in a state of blood loss. Like Higgins.”
Jose buy. Both of his eyebrows were raised high. “What?” he asked after slightly recovering from the shock. “Uncle just said what? Who was found in such circumstances? You mean Uncle, like Higgins exactly?”
Marco answered in a nod. “Not everything found. Just some. Everything is a corpse and the condition is the same as Higgins.”
“Who has met? Police already know?”
Marco did not answer. The man looked at him straight, making Jose realize that the police must have known.
The police and security in the city were indeed held by Marco from behind. Since childhood Jose had known that Inspector Bjork always reported to his uncle whenever something happened in the city. Jose was ready to accept that his uncle had a secret or two, but this one was completely unexpected. He rose up in shock. His face was twisted in disbelief.
“And their families know about this?”
“What's the matter? That their family members were found in a terrible state, their blood was drained? What do you have to say to other families who are hoping to find their missing family members? All there is is is spreading unnecessary fear and despair.”
“But they are all looking forward to the latest news! Life or death!”
Marco took a breath. “They wait, with hope. Therefore Bjork was still filled with smiles despite being in a worried state. They all have the passion to live. If we tell the public, there is panic—“
“This is a public lie!” Jose cut in anger. “Everyone deserves to know that there is danger waiting for them!”
“Jose, Jose,” Marco said patiently, “listen, society is not as smart as you think. If they knew there was a threat, what do you think they would do? So more alert? Subject to orders issued by the police? No. gabe. They're gonna freak out. They will be in a mess here and there, afraid, maybe even unnecessary riots. This city will be paralyzed. You want that? There's a lot at stake here, not just about one or two minor things.”
The old man blinked in surprise, then gave a subtle thin smile. “Surely it is also one of the reasons.”
“Glorious,” spray Jose. But he took a breath and held back the emotions. He needed to know another detail from what his uncle had just told him. “So, who did it?”
“So investigated,” Marco said. “He has dared to enter the territory of Argent. I've doubled the security. Do you know why I told you? So you're not being rash. You always put yourself in danger, so I warned you first. Obey the curfew that the police have set."
“Uncle has found a clue about the culprit?” Jose rubbed his face. His knees trembled at the thought of a creature walking in their midst, but he tried to brace himself.
“Not."
The answer disappointed Jose.
“But you said you heard a horse last night, right? Horses are sensitive animals. They were also in a fuss at the time Higgins was killed. Could be a sign, I'll discuss it with your father.”
“Dad also know about this?” Jose almost shouted. “Who else knows? Does the Garnet Family know?”
Marco shakes. “In addition to Robert, Inspector Bjork, just me and Edgar. We didn't talk about this in front of Renata, so your mother doesn't know."
Jose traced his uncle's face in detail, looking for a sign or letter that hid something. There were many lines on the old face, and he knew that his uncle was hiding many things. He took a breath, exhaled slowly before nodding. “I won't tell anyone about this. Uncle can trust me.”
“I know it.” Marco gave a brief nod. He took a deep breath, looking more relaxed. “And if there is any sound of horses or animals noisily, do not leave the house. Don't go anywhere. If you need to, you better wake George or me.”
Jose nodded again, his head still foggy. “So, something that kidnapped many of these humans did it to take their blood?”
“Ya, I don't know for what.”
“Like a vampire so?” Jose proposed, hesitating. It felt completely unethical to bring up unreasonable speculations about the way the poor people died.
“Can be." His uncle nodded again.
“But the vampire does not exist,” Jose debated himself his proposal. He shook slowly. “Not making sense."
“We can never know absolutely anything about one thing, right?”
“On things of a fantasy nature, of course it is impossible. His own fantasy has proven that it does not exist in the real world.”
“Fantasy can appear because there is another concept that precedes it,” Marco menukas. “Like for example mermaids exist because of mermaids. Then what could explain this loss of blood other than something like a vampire?”
“Something like a vampire,” Jose emphasized. “Uncle himself said like. Like a tree, it is not a tree. Like the devil means not the devil. Like a vampire means not a vampire.”
