Karmina is a pantun consisting of two lines. Karmina is a short version of pantun. Another name for karmina is a flash pantun or two strands. Karmina is an oral literature that is part of Malay literature. The composing of the temple on the karmina has no fixed number and shape. At first, the karmina consisted of four lines, where each line consisted of four to five syllables and then used as a sentence.
However, over time, the form of karmina becomes two lines and has syllables as many as 8-12 syllables. The function of karmina is as a means of expressing feelings and ideas, a means of giving advice, as a distraction from conversation, and so forth. Karmina is only occasionally used in everyday life, especially for giving advice humorously, making fun of it, or for subtly insinuating while joking. Karmina is only used as a joke or entertainment while relaxing or filling free time so it is not popular like pantun.
Characteristics and Structure of Karmina
1. Karmina Characteristics
The Karmina consists of two lines.
Karmina is a-a or b-b.
The first line is called a sampiran.
The second line is called the contents.
Each line on the karmina consists of 8-12 syllables or four syllables.
Between the sampiran and the contents there is no relationship with the others.
Two things are contained that are contrary, namely seduction or commandment.
Each line must always end with a comma, except on the fourth line, which always ends with a dot.
2. Karmina Structure
The structure of the karmina consists of two rows, the first row is a sampiran or karmina figurative. Meanwhile, the second row is the contents of the pantun karmina. The content of the karmina can be either a straightforward statement or an allusion to something.
